Compulsory Home Checks
We are required by NSPCA regulations to do a property check to ensure that your property is suitable and to ensure the animal’s safety.
Although this might sound like unnecessary bureaucracy, we have found that some people adopt animals for the purpose of hunting, dog fighting and other illegal activities. It is only because we love our animals that we want to make sure they will be happy and cared for, so please, open your home to us the way you want to open it to your new pet.
What is the adoption process?
You need to visit the SPCA Tshwane (Waltloo or Centurion) and meet the animal you are interested in. An adoption application is completed at the SPCA centre and a R202 (non-refundable) deposit is paid to reserve the animal. This amount will be deducted from the adoption fee. All adoption applications are subject to approval from an SPCA Tshwane Inspector. If you are adopting a dog, and already have existing dog(s) you are required to bring them to the SPCA branch for a “meet & greet” to confirm compatibility. After all documentation is received and compatibility is approved, a home check will be conducted by the SPCA Tshwane . Once the home check is approved, the animal based on health and age will be sterilized, microchipped, vaccinated and dewormed (which is included as part of the adoption fee). After sterilisation the adopted animal will be kept overnight at our Animal Clinic to ensure the animal is healthy enough for departure. You will be notified when your adopted animal is ready for collection.
Please take note:
- Tshwane Municipal by-laws allow a maximum of 3 pets per residential property. If you live on a plot or farm then you are allowed more.
- Should you live in a complex, you are required to provide a letter from the Body Corporate stipulating the number of animals permitted per household.
- NB! Animals that are too young to be sterilised, will not be allowed to be adopted by persons outside of the SPCA Tshwane jurisdiction.
What is included in the adoption fee?
Adoption fees are R650 for cats, R850 for dogs and R990 for puppies and kittens under 6 months old. All adopted animals are sterilised, microchipped, vaccinated and dewormed. An initial non-refundable deposit of R202 must be paid to reserve the animal and once the home check has been approved, the balance must be paid.
